Juniper Lane Bakery

Fresh sourdough and pastries, baked every morning in Pittsburgh

Juniper Lane Bakery is a neighborhood bakery on Juniper Lane in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Every morning before sunrise our bakers mix, shape, and bake the day's bread from a sourdough starter we have kept alive since the bakery opened. The case fills with croissants, morning buns, fruit galettes, and sandwich loaves, and the first customers of the day are usually neighbors who time their walk to the smell coming down the block. We believe a bakery should be simple: good flour, slow fermentation, real butter, and bread that is sold the day it is baked or not sold at all.

Our breads and pastries

The daily bake always includes our country sourdough, a seeded multigrain loaf, baguettes, and a rotating baker's choice that follows the season — roasted garlic and rosemary in the winter, tomato and basil when the gardens come in. The pastry case holds butter croissants, almond croissants made from yesterday's batch, cinnamon morning buns, and a fruit galette that changes with whatever the market brought that week. On Fridays we add challah and a gluten-free oat loaf, baked first thing before any wheat flour touches the bench. Everything is made in this kitchen, in small batches, by people who live in the neighborhood.

Custom cakes and orders

For birthdays, weddings, and office celebrations, our pastry team builds custom cakes to order — layered, filled, and finished by hand. A cake order starts with a short conversation about servings, flavors, and the date you need it, and we confirm every detail in writing before the deposit. Seventy-two hours is our standard notice, though the calendar fills quickly around graduation season and the December holidays. Day-of bread can be reserved by phone before 9 AM and held at the counter until close, so the loaf you planned dinner around is never sold out from under you.

Visiting the bakery

You will find us at 812 Juniper Lane in Pittsburgh, a short walk from the Murray Avenue business district. The 61C and 64 buses stop two blocks away, bike racks stand right outside the door, and free street parking lines both sides of the street. Mornings are our busiest hours — the first sourdough usually leaves the oven at 6:40 and the line forms soon after — while early afternoons are quiet and best for a coffee and a pastry at the counter. Day-old loaves, when there are any, are half price after 1 PM and free to any neighbor who asks at the counter; bread should never go to waste while someone nearby is hungry. Gift cards are available in any amount at the register and by phone, and they never expire.
